The Vario 2000 Universal Hatchet is a durable and reliable packing tool. At 18 inches in overall length, this hatchet can be easily strapped to your pack for all your wilderness excursions. The wedge incline in the blade allows the axe to be used comfortably for both splitting and cutting work. Most camping hatchets feature a slim profile, designed primarily to be used as a cutting tool. The Vario 2000 hatchet blade is specifically shaped into a go-between tool that is efficient as both a cutting and splitting blade.

The Vario 2000 system is Helko Werk’s patented axe design. All parts, heads, and handles are compatible with one another, and the screw system offers easy interchangeability. The head is assembled onto the handle with screws that are driven through the handle and are secured by a butt-plate retainer cap. The steel overstrike protector covers the assembly and offers protection to the handle. All parts are assembled with an allen wrench, which is supplied with each axe.

It’s okay Bit is malformed and “curves” to the right when looking at it from the poll end. This is not just a “minor variance due to the head having been drop-forged by hand”, it’s a lack of care and quality control. To be fair, it’s not just Helko that is (apparently) focusing on quantity over quality…this is becoming increasingly common with most manufacturers (yes, even European and American), and I’ve come to expect that any contemporary made axe (with the usual exception of…

I liked this axe even though I returned it. This axe seems like a cross between splitting and felling. I suppose that’s why it’s called a utility axe (duh). The product information is incorrect. It lists the axe at 2.5 pounds; it’s double that. I was very surprised at the weight. So much so that I thought I may have ordered the Heavy Utility Axe. I consider myself a fairly strong guy, and do quite a lot of manual labor. I don’t think I would want the Heavy Axe unless I was using it to split (and there are splitting options so I…

and this Vario 2000 splitting axe looks as beautiful as it works I am a retired blacksmith who has forged all types of tools over the years, and this Vario 2000 splitting axe looks as beautiful as it works. I tried out the Helko “classic” splitting axe, but did not like the balance in the swing, so I decided to try this one out. It is perfect for the person who likes speed and momentum to split wood, instead of the weight and mass of a heavier splitting maul. I also tried out a Fiskars splitting axe, and while it is very similar in performance, it…
