This fire piston is both a useful emergency tool, and also a unique conversation piece. It uses the power of compressed air to ignite a small piece of char cloth. The char cloth is provided, and once an ember is glowing, the included jute can be used as tinder to get your campfire going. The actual starting of a fire involves a few steps. First, removing the piston from the cylinder can be a little bit difficult because of changes in atmospheric pressure. Once you get the piston out, put a small amount of the included lubricant on the o-rings at the top of the piston. Put a couple of small pieces of char cloth in the tip of the piston, put the larger cylinder on top, and quickly push down, and quickly remove. Char cloth is vegetable fiber that, via the process of pyrolysis, has been charred. This is typically done by being put in a metal container and placed in a fire.
