The BaoFeng UV-5R is a compact hand held transceiver providing 4 watts in the frequency range of 136- 174 MHz and 400-480 MHz.
It is a compact, economical HT that includes special VHF receive band from 65 – 108 MHz which includes the regular FM broadcast band. Dual watch and dual reception is supported.
The transceiver is a micro-miniature multiband FM transceiver with extensive receive frequency coverage, providing local-area two-way amateur communications along with unmatched monitoring capability.

Warranty useless Buyer Beware – Baofeng only honors the warranty through their US office that puts it off on the reseller represented by Amazon. In other words the warranty is useless. They are great radios when they work – but if they fail – you’re out the money. It’s only $30 but it’s the principle of standing behind what is presented, so either the reseller, Baofeng, USA, or Amazon are misrepresenting the warranty.
It’s complicated… but it’s cheap. Bought two of these to use with my other car enthusiasts so we could communicate clearly without having to stay on the phone or text each other. And after tons of agonizing research it turns out these “technically” aren’t suited for “legal” use…It transmits too high of a wattage for FRS (family radio station) channels, and you cannot transmit on GMRS dedicated channels without a license. And even IF it met all of these requirements, it’s not approved by the FCC! In the end my friends…
Get the BF-F8hp!! Where I work there are never enough company walkies, so I decided to purchase my own, in hopes it would work with our system. I chose the BaoFeng based on word-of-mouth accolades. I got the least expensive model (UV-5R) in hopes it would work. It did. That is, it connected with our work frequency, no problem. I gave it a 2-star rating due to the VERY annoying rythmic static pulse it continually generated. Wearing it all day with that noise could drive me crazy! Another problem with the radio…
