Maybe okay for hiking, but a no go for five days of backpacking I really wanted to love these pants. I bought these for use in backpacking because I understood them to be good pants for that purpose. Lightweight, breathable fabric, easy conversion to shorts, the (usually) reputable Columbia name. Here is what happened: as described, these pants ride *below* the hip. Hip-huggers, sort of. Great all year pants These pants are very lightweight, but durable. They wear so comfortably well. They material is light and stretchy. I like where the bottoms zip off. Usually zip off pants have the zippers below the knee, which when the bottoms are zipped off, means you’re almost wearing capris. Not a good look for a dude. These pants zip off just above the knee. They are perfect for autumn and spring backpacking trips, and I believe they would be great the other months of the year also. I’ll be wearing them…

If you are larger or more muscular build- READ!!! Pants are great as far as durability, design and functionality that you would expect from the other reviews they truly are great pants. Sizing is hit and miss depending on your build. 3 stars for the inconvience of having to reorder and ship product out and wait for it again.Pants have a slimmer cut to them through the butt and thighs (if you are muscular or have a bubble bum- you WILL have problems).
