The Council Tool Co.’s WOOD-CRAFT Pack Axe design is intended to produce a multi-functional premium axe which can successfully cut, chop, split, carve, shave, hew, hammer, aid in fire starting, and other key WOOD-CRAFT and outdoor activities.
At 2.0 pounds, the Wood-Craft “Pack Axe” is made using 5160 steel, heat treated on both ends for superior strength.
This model has a 24″ Premium Curved Hickory Handle (handle length is before hanging and assembly) and includes a high quality welted leather Mask to protect your Pack Axe from the elements and you from your extremely sharp Pack Axe.

Great design, Poor execution At this price I was expecting to get a tool that shows pride in craftsmanship. What I got was a tool with an overall lower level of fit and finish than axes in the $50 range. First, like another reviewer, I noticed there was nick in the edge of my brand new “premium” axe. Outstanding American made pack axe I was finally able to put this axe through its paces on my last backpacking trip and was very impressed and stayed warm as well. I was worried at first about the edge retention and hardness after a couple of customer reviews said they had problems with the edge holding up due to inconsistent heat treatment, but that was when this axe was first released, and it seems Council Tool quickly made the necessary adjustments and more importantly made sure the customers affected recieved a…
Wow, I was truly amazed with my new axe for about one minute; then I used it. (Please see up-date) Wow, I was truly amazed with my new axe for about one minute; then I used it. I took it out back to split some wood I needed done to fix lunch. I clipped a knot, and rolled the edge right on over. I have purposely sent my CRKT Chogan Woods through knots with no issues: AT ALL!!! In fact, I finished the knot that rolled the edge on my Council Tool, with the Chogan. Furthermore, the edge does not hold as well as my Chogan either. I thought I was going to get my first truly high end premium…
