The Frees cape Hatchet uses a forged steel head that’s world class in strength and a design that ensures efficient and reliable chopping. It can tackle a myriad of campsite duties; create kindling for the fire, pound in tent stakes, or make a primitive shelter with ease. Coated with a low-friction surface, the hardened blade slices through wood at a greater than average depth, allowing for faster chopping and maximum overall performance efficiency. The Frees cape hatchet is a rough, ready and clever tool in the Gerber Frees cape series. Additionally, when not protecting its blade, the sheath conveniently stores in the handle.

I literally have split a ½ a cord of firewood … I literally have split a ½ a cord of firewood with this Gereber 17.5 inch hatchet since my purchase back on 12-2016. The largest piece of firewood I have split with the Gereber 17.5 inch hatchet is 3 to 5 inches round at approximately 18 inches long. Some hardwoods and Fir in a variety of different shapes. The blade is still razor sharp though the blade does need a touch up when I missed a piece of wood I was splitting. I have pounded, split wood down the middle, and slammed this Gereber 17.5…

Buy this one, over here! Bought this axe for a family car camping trip to Rocky Mountain National Park. First, the axe is light and compact enough for my medium framed 12 y/o son to split logs endlessly (and enthusiastically). The axe really does seem to chop three times faster. It did finally get somewhat dull after a few days of abuse, but it never lost its splitting power. Overall a great buy and a good seller to deal with.

Legendary This is a great splitting axe that will handle more than you expect it to for its light weight. This is SHARP and has stayed that way for three cords of wood so far.One thing I would check before purchasing is the price of the similar fiskars axe – they are the same company and my gerber even says fiskars on it.
