A nice size for a home shop I am an amateur home shop machinist and wanted a surface plate to check my work. I looked at other sizes and was realistic. In my small shop, one has to move things around as needed and while a 18×24 @ 150 lbs or a 24×36 @ 495 lbs would have been nice but then I can not move it from table top to table top. All in all I think this is a good work surface for a small shop Certificate of inspection is just that a piece of paper , NO mapping or readout of the surface. Sweeping the surface with a .0001″ indicator I do think it is within tolerance of + or – .00005″. All in all I think this is a good work surface for a small shop. I have more surface area than my old 9 x 12 inch plate, but it came with a surface map and error readout. If the paperwork would have been worth the ink I would have gone 5 star.

Accurate, good price, excellent value. Excellent, accurate surface plate. The “certification” isn’t worth much, but the product is within spec for it’s advertised accuracy. Used for hobbyist and occasional for-hire machinist use. It has a couple of blob-like inclusions in the granite which don’t affect the accuracy but affect the visual consistency, like lumps in the cream of wheat. If that’s important to you, by all means buy the Starrett pink granite plate – I would have it I wanted to spend the money for it. For me,…
