The new Starter’s design is machined and complex—yet smoothly functional. The BlackWash finish gives it a rough-and-tumble look, yet the finish isn’t just for looks. The coating provides an extra measure of protection for the metal, and the BlackWash helps hide any additional scratches you put on the knife during normal use. The Starter is equipped with SpeedSafe assisted opening for fast and easy one-handed opening. It opens neatly with the built-in flipper or thumbstud. A liner lock safely secures the blade open during use, and then closes easily for storage or carry. The all-steel design really shows off the BlackWash finish. The Starter includes our deep-carry pocketclip so the knife rides comfortably low in the pocket for discreet carry.

Strike One I own a dozen Kershaw knives and am usually happy with what I get for the money. I usually find them fantastic for EDC and farm work.As noted in nearly every review, this thing is HEAVY. You could use it as a striking implement due to the metal frame. Not ideal for concealed EDC due to it’s size/weight. If the zytel frames bothered you, this is the polar opposite. It is SOLID.The bad: The flipper is completely non usable on mine. It has a mind of it’s own and binds up…

It’s Okay for the Price, but the Kershaw Manifold is Better for Only A Dollar More The Kershaw Starter (1301BW) is okay for the price, but I think that for about $1.00 more the Kershaw Manifold (1303BW) is a noticeably better workaday or starter knife. The length measurements in the description are accurate, but the listed weight measurements are obviously way off. This knife weighs 6.65 oz. on my scale (as compared to the Kershaw Manifold which weighs in at 5.90 oz.). I like the feel of heavier knives in my hand, but 6.65 oz seems pretty overweight even for the…

Some obvious typos in the description of this knife… Some obvious typos in the description of this knife (It’s not left/right, or tip-up/tip-down reversible, and has a liner lock rather than a frame lock). The assist is extremely strong. Don’t buy this for someone not used to handling knives.Very heavy at 6.5 ounces/183 grams.Budget Chinese stainless blade steel (3cr13 at 52-55 Rockwell). That said, it does what you’d expect for the money. I bought this one for it’s looks, and to experience speedsafe with both a thumb…
