Tap water may look clean, but it may still contain potentially harmful contaminants. Chlorine is a type of disinfectant added to water to control microbes, yet harmful by-products can form from chlorine, such as total trihalomethanes (TTHMs). Depending on the geographic area, water can also be contaminated with everything from industrial and agricultural pollutants to heavy metals, sediments, and trace levels of pharmaceuticals. The PUR 2-Stage Water Pitcher Filter reduces lead, 99.9 percent of microbiological cysts (cryptosporidium and giardia), and can remove over 96% of trace levels of pharmaceuticals–all while retaining the beneficial fluoride in drinking water. The 2-Stage design has an activated carbon microfilter layer to reduce sediment, chlorine taste and odor, chlorination by-products like TTHMs, and agricultural and industrial pollutants. An additional layer is added to trap sediment. A single filter provides up to 40 gallons (1 to 2 months) of clean water, and should be replaced after this period. This replacement filter is meant for use only with the PUR 2-Stage Water Pitcher and Dispenser.

Don’t give up if they clog up. Been using these filters for years and just had a problem with one that worked for a few days then wouldn’t filter any more water. If this happens to you, do what I did which was suggested by someone who posted here, although I doubled what she/he had done. Take the filter out of the container (make sure your hands are clean). Rinse it a bit then bang it against the kitchen sink while it is upright – turning it a little each time (sounds stupid but it works). Repeat until you have rotated…

PUR filter quality is not as good anymore Two out of Three in the original package did not fit the PUR pitchers. This is the first time this has happened in my many years’ use of this product. Over time, the product has become less effective, now only a two-level filter versus the old three-level, but I still thought it was better than a Brita product. No longer. I will no longer use PUR products. And I will no longer purchase from this Amazon vendor (Rebeca L. Florence).

POOR QUALITY CONTROL I’ve been using PUR water pitchers and filters for close to ten years. I have three different pitchers (two small, one large), and each gets used on a daily basis. Obviously, I’ve used many filters over that ten year period, and during that time occasionally I’d get a filter that would not properly filter water after a few fillings. Less than –guesstimating– 1% of the filters were ‘defective.’ However, recently, that is in the last six months, nearly EVERY filter I’ve used has had this…
