Many great features, some not I bought this to replace an older model Uniden MHS135DSC that had one glaringly bad feature: The GPS position disappeared from the radio display the instant the transmit key was pressed, displaying the word “Transmitting” in place of the GPS coordinates, just when you needed to see them. The Standard Horizon HX870 does NOT have that problem. The GPS coordinates on the SH870 remain on screen during transmissions, so you can read them directly off the screen while talking with the…

Best one I’ve found. This is in my opinion the best handheld Marine VHF radio available right now. Its reception is, as far as handhelds go, as good as it gets. The built-in DSC is a lifesaver in an emergency and the native GPS is useful for basic navigation. A real multi-use tool. Ive used this as my primary radio and as a backup. Peace of mind in a small package.

Two steps forward, Two steps back. It is fair to say that Standard Horizon (Yaesu) has taken away as many, if not more features than it’s added to its marine VHF’s over the years. I’ve owned their brand for some time and have stubbornly held on to my HX-471 and still consider it the best model to date made by any manufacturer of marine handhelds, period. So they have a high benchmark with me when I observe the following with the HX-870:
