There are a lot of of poncho/tarp combinations available and they are pretty useful. This one is quite sturdy and works for that purpose. What it adds is the ability to use it as a hammock, and it works quite well for that as well. The way you hang it is a little unusual for a hammock, since it just has one long continuous loop of rope going through each end. In a pinch, you can hang it directly like that, but you’re probably better off also carrying a couple of carabiners and some webbing, both to be able to hang it from trees that are further apart, and to protect the trees. Note that this makes a hammock out of a waterproof material; that’s an advantage when it’s colder and windier, but less comfortable in warm weather.
