The Classic Journeyman is Helko’s solution to the quest for the ultimate wilderness pack axe. A cross between a hatchet and a conventional axe, the pack axe is designed to be lightweight, compact, and easy to carry while trekking through wilderness. Its unique head weight and handle length allow for comfortable use with one or two hands, and it is equally capable of performing cutting and splitting work. The Journeyman occupies the relatively underserviced niche between hatchet and conventional axe, and is the perfect all-purpose “in between” companion for the avid backpacker, camper, or woodsman. The poll (opposite the blade) may be used for light hammering, such as striking in tent stakes. The head is buffed and polished to a highly reflective finish that reduces cutting friction and improves rust resistance.

An axe Odin would be proud to carry This is an amazing pack axe at a great price. I have tested it out and it chews through wood with ease. The size is also perfect. Light enough to carry with enough heft for small felling work. This axe showed me that they can forge an axe just as well as their Nordic counterparts. The only item that I can say is “negative” is it comes factory sharp (plenty sharp for an axe) I just like anything with an edge that can slice paper, but that is just a preference.

Now it’s perfect What a beautiful tool, bright, well finished and very well balanced, a seemingly natural extension of my hand and arm. The mating of ax head to handle is as perfect as possible. The grain orientation and the handle itself are flawless. My only complaint: about 3/16″ on the forward edge of the ax was not as well shaped/ground as the rest of the very uniform edge. However, just a few careful minutes with a file, then a fine stone and I believe it is now just fine, smooth and sharp…

Great axe for the money! I am an Axe knife and Tomahawk junkie… Actually if it has anything to do with the outdoors or survival I just seem to have to have it. For quite awhile I have been buying Cold Steel and or other Chinese made axes that I do have to say they do the job and quite well especially for the price paid. So one day I was cruising an Axe forum and came across a very well written article about the “High End” axes from Sweden, Germany etc. So, the first axe I bought was a Granfors Bruks…
