I have had some great compasses and for a very long time Ok, I have had some great compasses and for a very long time, though I needed to replace a lost tool and this was the prettiest it looked all stainless the clips are Plastic, welcome to the modern age Plastic is good enough most of the time though talk to me in fifty years if you are really curious about plastic.

Probably among the best drafting compasses available. I bought this compass to replace a Pro-Art compass, which is also a gearhead type center wheel bow compass and nearly identical in size. The Pro-Art has a plastic gearhead housing at the apex. This plastic structure is prone to flexure and results in a lack of precision when drawing large circles unless you leave your line very light. The Alvin SL2 is all metal except for the two small cylinders the engage the threads of the center wheel adjustment screw, which are hard plastic. In…

Not a worthy compass. There are a lot of good things about this compass. The quick-adjust function seems to work well without introducing any sort of wobble. The worm gear itself is quick and smooth. It has the potential to be a worthy compass, but ultimately it is not. There are just too many points of failure. The ‘double knee-joint’ was the killer on mine, one of the joints simply cannot be tightened such that it won’t collapse on itself. The other one is better, but still not acceptable.
