Cheap little amateur HT. Requires license and programming. Yes, these are pieces of junk and canât be taken too seriously but I still love the BF-888S. Why? 1. They can easily be gutted and the module used for little projects. I.e., you can do all sorts of controller projects with them. Iâd love to see a VHF version of the BF-888S that could be used for APRS projects. 2. Keep one around as a backup of a backup HT. Look for the BF-888S battery that has a miniUSB charging port. With this battery, you have a very flexible backup radio that can be…
Good radios for the money – But not legal as sold These are very good quality. The feel, controls, and cabinets are all substantial. When you turn the device on, a voice says “Power On” and then speaks the channel number. As you change channels, it speaks the channel you just selected.Squelch is a little aggressive, but there is a button to release it when needed and the software allows you to tweak it, but once set, you can not alter the level from the radio, so a little aggressive is a good thing. Most of the time…

I figured I was taking a risk based on the cost of these radios, but the reviews were so good, I figured I’d try my luck. I’m glad I did. There is one tricky bit to these radios – they are programmed with default Chinese frequencies. What does that mean? It means that:1) these will work just fine out of the box with other…
