Long lasting I bought a box of these and of the Green as well. On the first night I cracked one of each to test them around 7pm. Both lit up very fast. The red does put out enough light to read by but not for any significant distance. (The red wavelength is used by military in darkened conditions to provide light without giving away location. A good example is navy ships after sunset. It also doesn’t mess with your night vision going from the light to dark.) The green stick was very bright and provided…
Lower light than other colors The Red is about 20% the brightness of the Greens and Yellow, not enough to read by.
Red Isn’t For Late Night Picnics! Having spent 32 years with the military, I’m quite familiar with “ChemLights” which is the military term for these 12-hour light sticks. I noted that one reviewer was less then happy with the illumination capabilities of the red ChemLights. Yes, if you’re looking to illuminate a large area or even a two person tent in a safe and secure area, red is probably not the best choice in colors.
