Good small axe for backpacking. Works great. It is small and the handle is short (as described and expected), so there is not much leverage. I use some heavy item to hit on the back of the axe, like a rock. The black coating seems strong enough to withstand the abuse.
All in all its a pretty good for a backup or backpacking Feels very tough but it’s a little awkward to hold because the handle is as thin as the head. I added a few more layers of para cord which did help some. All in all its a pretty good for a backup or backpacking.
Ok axe but not very useful. This Elk Ridge ER-272 8″ Axe has a good construction, and the black coating on the haft and handle are very good and didn’t chip off after even digging with this axe. It even has a good weight for backpacking. Having said that the axe is far too light to be useful at processing wood for camping or hiking. Save yourself the money and buy a folding saw if your going to be processing a lot of wood at once. I also experienced the same issue with the sheath as some of the other reviewers have…
