Works quite well, and very utilitarian feel to it When I go camping, I always bring a box of wooden matches and a bic lighter inside of a snack sized Ziploc bag. The bag keeps them waterproof and protected. I have never, ever had a need for anything else to start fires with while camping. That being said, when I take my son camping, the whole process of teaching him how to make a fire is as fun as it is educational and therapeutic. For that reason, I’ve taught him to make fires using various steels, rods and strikers. When this product arrived…
Easy fire staring once learned and practiced. Larger and more robust than the usual fire starter “combos” being sold. The Ferro rod is 5/16″ diameter and just shy of 2-3/4″ long, unlike the usual wimpy 1-1/2″ – 1-3/4″ long and 3/16″ diameter ones found in other fire starter kits. The same goes for the magnesium source, this one is a robust 3/4″ diameter rod measuring 3-1/2″ long… that’s a LOT of magnesium.
First time with a ferro rod ended up being the easiest fire starting I’ve ever experienced! I’d never used a fire starter like this before so I was pretty pumped to try it out when it arrived…
