If you’re a beginner, the Starter Model 1-2-3 compass is a great tool for working with maps. Its base plate is designed especially for children’s smaller hands. The rotating capsule has 2-Degree dial graduations and a clear base plate that makes it easier to read map details and plan the course. Inch and millimeter rules are provided for measuring distance.

Great for new Scouts. The Starter 1-2-3 is the compass I recommend for new scouts in my troop (BUT NOT ANYMORE… read on… this was a 5-star review). It’s worth the extra $5 over the “no-name” compasses. The only other compass I recommend for scouts is the Silva Explorer 203, which also adds the scale for USGS 1:24,000 and 1:62,500 topo maps. The Explorer 203 is the one I carry hiking and hunting.
This compass is right on target We used this on an entry level orienteering course and we were able to navigate it with the best of ’em.I think the hole for the cord could be larger, but a key ring takes care of that.
