The average level of carbon found in this metal usually falls right around the 1.5% mark. High carbon steel has a reputation for being especially hard, but the extra carbon also makes it more brittle than other types of steel. This type of steel is the most likely to fracture under stress. High carbon steel remains popular for a wide variety of uses. This type of steel is preferred in the manufacturing of tools such as drill bits, knives, masonry nails, saws, metal cutting tools and woodcutting tools. This is the most beautiful piece of craftsmanship… I think I’ve ever seen in a hatchet. It was obvious that GREAT care was made in its construction, which I wouldn’t be surprised a whit if it was handmade, as it claimed in the brochure. The steel, the handle, both gorgeous. I don’t know about utility–it’s so pretty I’m almost afraid to use it–but for the price, my mind was blown. I will definitely be buying more, if only to carry around at the next Renaissance Faire. SUCH beautiful work for such an awesome price. Bravo!!! The pictures…
